About Teesside International Airport

Teesside International Airport serves the Tees Valley, including Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees, Darlington and Hartlepool, as well as parts of County Durham and North Yorkshire. It is at Middleton St George, east of Darlington, about 12 minutes by car from Darlington, 15 minutes from Stockton and 20 minutes from Middlesbrough. According to UK Civil Aviation Authority figures, the airport handled 260,762 terminal passengers in 2025, around 260,000, an increase of about 14.5% on 2024.

The airport returned to public ownership in 2019. Tees Valley Combined Authority owns 75% and the Teesside Airport Foundation owns the remaining 25%. It is operated by Teesside International Airport Limited. The same year, the airport dropped the name Durham Tees Valley Airport and went back to being called Teesside International.

The airport has one terminal and a single asphalt runway, 2,291 metres long. Before becoming a civil airport the site was RAF Middleton St George, a Second World War bomber station.

How to get to Teesside International Airport

By bus

Stagecoach service 6 runs hourly between Stockton High Street and Darlington Town Hall, calling at the airport and passing through Ingleby Barwick and Yarm. Tees Flex, an on-demand bus service booked through a mobile app, also serves the area.

By train

No trains serve the airport. Teesside Airport railway station, which only ever had a very limited service, has been closed since 2022. The nearest mainline station is Darlington, about 12 minutes away by car. It is on the East Coast Main Line, with direct trains to London, York, Newcastle and Edinburgh.

By road

The postcode for sat nav is DL2 1LU. From the east or west, use the A66 or the A67. Drivers coming on the A1(M) from the south should leave at junction 57, and from the north at junction 59. From the A19, join the A66 towards the airport. There is parking directly in front of the terminal, which can be booked online, and there are drop-off and pick-up options. Royal Cars is the airport's preferred taxi company.

Services before security include a landside café, the SkyBar, a Fairs-Lloyds Travel shop and car hire. After security, passengers will find:

Airlines and destinations

Teesside offers a small network of mostly leisure routes, together with a hub link to Amsterdam. Ryanair flies to Alicante and Málaga all year round and adds summer flights to Faro, Majorca and Corfu, and in summer 2026 it increased Alicante to four flights a week. TUI flies to Majorca, including fly-cruise holidays. KLM operates flights to Amsterdam Schiphol, where passengers can connect to worldwide destinations, and plans to increase them from two to three a day in winter 2026.

For summer 2026, Mavi Gök Airlines (MGA) started a weekly service to Antalya in Turkey from 1 July. Premier Holidays and Fairs-Lloyds Travel offer seasonal holiday flights to Jersey with connections to Guernsey. Seasonal trips to Lapland also run in winter.

History

RAF Middleton St George opened in 1941. It was Bomber Command's most northerly airfield and was home to RAF and Royal Canadian Air Force squadrons flying Wellington, Halifax and Lancaster bombers. The first civil flight, a Mercury Airlines service to Manchester, left in April 1964. On 1 November 1966 Princess Margaretha of Sweden opened the passenger terminal, which is still the airport's main building. British Midland flew to London Heathrow from 1969 until 2009.

The airport was renamed Durham Tees Valley Airport in 2004, and passenger numbers peaked at almost 918,000 in 2006 before falling sharply. In 2019 Tees Valley Combined Authority bought the airport back into public ownership and restored the Teesside International name. Stobart Aviation ran the airport under a ten-year plan from 2019, but it withdrew in 2021.
