About Edinburgh Airport

Edinburgh Airport is the busiest airport in Scotland. It sits near Ingliston, about 6 miles (9 km) west of Edinburgh city centre and a few minutes from the M8 and M9 motorways, so it is also easy to reach from much of central and eastern Scotland.

UK Civil Aviation Authority figures show 16,969,731 terminal passengers used the airport in 2025, a rise of 7.5% on 2024. According to the airport, no Scottish airport had previously come close to 17 million passengers in a single year. Around 36 airlines fly from Edinburgh to more than 150 destinations.

Edinburgh Airport Limited runs the airport. VINCI Airports has owned a 50.01% stake since June 2024, and Global Infrastructure Partners owns the rest. There is one passenger terminal and a single runway, 06/24, which is 2,558 metres long with an asphalt surface.

How to get to Edinburgh Airport

By tram

The Edinburgh Trams stop is right outside the terminal, beside the plaza. Trams run to Newhaven via Edinburgh Gateway, Edinburgh Park, Murrayfield, Haymarket, Princes Street, St Andrew Square and Leith. Between 6:30am and 7pm trams run every 7 minutes, dropping to every 10 minutes early in the morning and later in the evening. The journey into the city centre takes about 30 minutes. Tickets can be bought from machines at the stop or online.

By train

The terminal has no railway station of its own, but the tram connects with four stations:

• Edinburgh Gateway: trains to Fife, Perth, Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness.
• Edinburgh Park: trains to Glasgow, Falkirk and Stirling.
• Haymarket: services across Scotland and to England.
• Edinburgh Waverley: the main city centre station, a short walk from the St Andrew Square tram stop.

Combined tram and train tickets are sold from machines in the check-in hall.

By bus and coach

• Airlink 100: Lothian's express bus to the city centre, stopping close to Waverley station and Princes Street. It runs around the clock, at least every 10 minutes during the day, and takes about 30 minutes.
• Lothian services 17 and 18: local buses to other parts of the city. Service 17 runs to Ocean Terminal and service 18 to Fort Kinnaird.
• Regional coaches: Scottish Citylink runs to Glasgow and Stirling, Stagecoach runs the Jet 747 and Jet 787 to Fife, and Ember runs coaches to Fife, Dundee, Aberdeen, Stirling, Fort William and Inverness.

The buses stop outside the terminal, next to the plaza. A coach park is located south of the multi-storey car park.

By road

The airport is a few minutes from the M8 and M9, and the postcode for sat navs is EH12 9DN. Parking on site includes Terminal, Mid Stay and Long Stay car parks, plus the lower-cost Plane Parking, which is linked to the terminal by a shuttle bus. All car parks are cashless. A free pick-up and drop-off area is located in the Long Stay car park, and car hire is available at the airport.

Terminal and facilities

Edinburgh has a single terminal building. Passenger services include:

• Lounges: the Turkish Airlines Lounge by Plaza Premium Group (near gate 13), Aspire (near gate 16) and Escape Lounge (near gate 4). Passengers on any airline can book all three.
• fastTRACK security: a paid priority lane through security that can be booked online.
• FastTRACK passport control: available to arriving passengers.
• Special assistance: passengers who book assistance are met at a dedicated point and helped through check-in and security.
• Customer service: live chat on the airport website and on Facebook Messenger.

Airlines and destinations

Edinburgh has an extensive route network. easyJet, Ryanair and Jet2.com are the leading low-cost and leisure airlines, flying to cities and holiday resorts across Europe, as well as to North Africa and Turkey. British Airways and Loganair fly to London and other UK cities, and Loganair also serves the Scottish islands, including Kirkwall, Sumburgh and Stornoway.

For connections through major hubs, KLM, Air France, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, Finnair, Emirates (to Dubai) and Qatar Airways (to Doha) all fly from Edinburgh. Transatlantic routes, many of them seasonal, are operated by United, Delta, American Airlines, JetBlue, Air Canada and WestJet to cities including New York, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Toronto and Calgary. Hainan Airlines flies to Beijing. In 2026 American Airlines added a New York service and Luxair started a seasonal route to Luxembourg.

History

The site became a military aerodrome in 1916 and took the name RAF Turnhouse after the Royal Air Force was formed in 1918. Its first runway was built at the start of the Second World War, and commercial flights began in 1947. The British Airports Authority took over in 1971, and the Queen opened a new terminal in 1977.

In 2012 BAA sold the airport to Global Infrastructure Partners for £807.2 million. Trams began serving the airport in May 2014, and VINCI Airports bought its majority stake in June 2024. After record passenger numbers in 2025, the airport says it is heading towards a significant expansion project.
